ITV plc acquires Scandinavian independent producer Silverback. Global Content division increases overseas production and format creation capabilities as part of strategy for growth.

LONDON and STOCKHOLM -- ITV plc announced today that it has acquired the Swedish-based independent production company and programme formats business Silverback AB.

The deal is consistent with ITV’s strategy to grow its production, format creation and distribution businesses in key international territories in order to help achieve the objective of doubling Global Content revenues by 2012.

ITV will pay a cash consideration of £5.2m. A further possible payment is contingent on profit performance over a three-year period.

The deal gives ITV the exclusive international rights (outside the Nordic territories) to all content, formats and series developed by Silverback. Silverback's sales team also joins ITV with immediate effect, following the stated goal of ITV’s sales, licensing and distribution division, ITV Worldwide, of becoming a leader in the global distribution of formats.

In turn, Silverback acquires the right to produce or sell ITV-owned formats in the Nordic territories in the same way as has been successfully achieved by ITV’s other wholly-owned production assets in the US, Germany and Australia.

The intention is that Silverback will expand its production capabilities beyond Sweden into other Scandinavian countries in due course.

Announcing the acquisition of Silverback, ITV’s Interim Managing Director of Global Content, Lee Bartlett, said: “Acquiring Silverback adds value to ITV from day one. The UK, Scandinavia and the US are among the leading exporters of television formats. With this deal we now have a presence in all three major territories and a growing and significant international formats business. Equally importantly, it brings into the ITV family an outstanding creative talent in the form of Anna Carrfors Bråkenhielm, who has had tremendous success developing and producing innovative programming that resonates all around the world on both TV and cross media platforms. We’re delighted to welcome Anna and her team into the fold.”

Silverback CEO Anna Carrfors Bråckenhielm said: “I’m tremendously excited about our new partnership with ITV. It gives Silverback’s formats unique access to Britain’s biggest commercial channel. Talpa Scandinavia and Scania co-operate to boost the image of professional truck drivers. ...

Talpa Scandinavia and Scania co-operate to boost the image of professional truck drivers. Talpa aims to bring a unique and original TV-format to broadcasters around the globe, and in addition turn Scania’s driver initiative - the World’s biggest truck driving competition focusing on road safety, driving skills and fuel economy - into an even more exciting event!

Talpa Scandinavia has created a reality format transforming 10 ordinary un-employed people into skilled truck drivers. The winner of the competition gets a wild card into Scania’s competition Young European Truck Driver (YETD).

Following on from its success in 2003 and 2005, the world's largest driving and road safety skills competition has returned for a third time with the launch of Young European Truck Driver 2007.

Scania arranges driver competitions in 40 countries on five continents. 40.000 truck drivers will participate. The European competition involves 28 countries. The final in 2005 gathered drivers from all over Europe and attracted 10,000 spectators cheering 28 years old Belgian driver Laurens D’Huyvetter to victory, winning a brand new, customized Scania truck.

Local qualifying rounds will take place throughout Europe during the spring. The big European Final will be held in Sweden in the fall. Talpa Scandinavia has, in addition to the TV-format, been involved in the design of the test track.

“The driver is by far the most important player in the transport operation. With our competitions we want to focus on the importance of the driver and contribute to improved road safety as well as the image of the profession. Now we have taken the opportunity to work with the team that created the games in Survivor and The Farm to help attract people to the truck driving profession and add some extra excitement to the competition,” says Cecilia Edström, Senior Vice President Corporate Relations at Scania.

“Working with Scania on this project has been tremendously rewarding. Joining an exciting TV-format with one of the biggest competitions of its like in the world creates a unique possibility. We are right now in final negotiations with a number of European broadcasters”, says Anna Carrfors Bråkenhielm, CEO of Talpa Scandinavia.

It is now clear that Telenor in Sweden and Talpa Scandinavia will continue their development co-operation for yet another year. Now with the target to challenge the traditional television as the first choice when it comes to entertainment.

The first mobile format, among many that will soon launche is Star Express, an alternative talent search via mobile that premieres this spring.

"We believe that the mobile and the web will be the first window when it comes to entertainment. We will present formats that are created directly for the mobile and the web. We will take the step from a supplement to traditional TV. Mobile-TV is the future. Star Express will be the first big venture. The challenge is to create the best content to the clients of Telenos and I’m convinced that Talpa is the perfect partner for this" says Micahel Bergman, Vice President New Business Telenor Sweden.

The co-operation also includes Telenor owned Bredbandsbolaget:

"It stands clear that there is a change of paradigms in the TV business. The interest for IPTV increases constantly. We will push the development with our own unique content. We see the co-operation with Talpa as a central part in our ambition to be in the fore front when it comes to innovative TV concepts in other environments than traditional TV" says Marcus Nylén, CEO Bredbandsbolaget.

It is extremely stimulating to be able to co-operate with Telenor in such a large extent and to be able to deliver products to a new platform. The media landscape and the patterns for content consumption are changing at a large speed. This demands for new ways of thinking in all aspects of the creative work and implementation. says Anna Carrfors Bråkenhielm, CEO Talpa Scandinavia.

Svenska Spel, the Swedish National Lottery, is to launch their brand new number game Limbo by the end of this month. In a unique co-operation, Talpa Scandinavia has developed a TV-format around the game. Limbo will be aired on Sweden’s biggest commercial station TV4, seven days a week plus a Saturday live final throughout the year.

Limbo is a number game where the person who picks the lowest unique number each day wins. In the Saturday live broadcast, seven winning players battle it out in the weekly final. They pick two numbers each and the lowest unique number wins each round. After three rounds one of them walks away with a big cash prize.

"We see great potential in Limbo and the fact of co-operating with Talpa Scandinavia and their creative team is a significant opportunity to make it even more exciting for a TV audience. Working together on this creates a combination that will be a strong offering in the market" says Håkan Sjöstrand, Senior Vice President Retail Division.

"Svenska Spel is the largest gaming company in Sweden and the world leader in developing gaming. I'm thrilled that they have picked Talpa to be their creative TV partner in this project. We have developed the TV format surrounding the game and we are to present a longer game-show version of this format to the international market" says Anna Carrfors-Bråkenhielm, CEO Talpa Scandinavia.

Global heating. Changes in the sensitive ecosystem. Endangered species. Now is the time to engage in the fight against the biggest threats of our time!

Ten celebrities head on an adventurous trip down the ladder of evolution. They start out in the civilisation of our time and eventually they will end up in Africa, eye to eye with our ancestors - the endangered mountain gorillas.

Talpa Scandinavia launches "CELEBRITIES IN THE MIST" – a different "Save the World" TV format that is created thanks to a unique co-operation with Government authorities in Uganda and in the long run, global nature and environmental organisations.

Today there are only 600 mountain gorillas left in our world. They all live in the remote mountain region on the border between Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. Via a unique co-operation between Talpa Scandinavia and Ugandan Government authorities, TV viewers from around the world can give them their support.

- "The idea behind this project is to create interest and engagement in a different manner. We have chosen to focus on helping the endangered mountain gorillas mainly because there are only a few of them left, but primarily because they carry such a symbolic value. This deals with pin pointing the possibilities to increase an engagement in saving our world, our nature and our environment in general. The mountain gorillas become a symbol in this context for something much bigger. Next round we can focus on other endangered species such as the giant pandas or the sea turtles", says Anna Carrfors Bråkenhielm, CEO Talpa Scandinavia.

The format doesn't only follow the celebrities' trip down the ladder of evolution, from Sweden to the misty mountains of Uganda – but follows in a parallel manner the life of the gorillas. During the series, as a viewer you will in a unique way get to know the gorilla families that our celebrities will meet eye to eye in the last episode. The format is created to endorse engagement and a very important aspect is the aspect of raising money in order for the viewers to show their support directly.

This is a TV series combined with nature documentary pieces, educating and entertaining at the same time. Talpa has spent a long time developing the concept and preparations are already under way for a production in Uganda. This fall a pilot will be shot in co-operation with the Dutch TV channel Talpa.

- "For many years format creators have tried to combine reality with an environmental theme without getting it quite right. For the first time, I see a format that combines the best of two worlds. The environment is the next big theme. Period. Having lived in East Africa for 6 years, I welcome the chance and I look forward to participate in such a unique project", says Ernst-Paul Hasselbach, Head of Reality at Talpa Television & host of Survivor and the international pilot of "Celebrities in the mist".

The Swedish TV community was stunned when Anna Carrfors Brakenhielm stepped down last year as CEO of Strix, the region's leading television production company. During her nine years in charge, Brakenhielm had become synonymous with the company that a decade ago was the first to buy and produce the "Survivor" format - foreshadowing the global reality TV trend.
